How to convert a sprite sheet to GIF

  1. Identify one animation

Choose the source sheet and set the frame dimensions, or enter rows and columns. Specify any empty space before or between the frames. Every frame in the selected layout must have the same dimensions.

  2. Choose the sequence

Use row order for a left-to-right strip, column order for a vertical sequence, or reverse row order. Start and count select a consecutive range after ordering: use them to omit unused cells or choose a single animation from a larger sheet.

  3. Set the speed and loop

Choose 1–50 FPS and play once or forever. Press Play preview to check the sequence. GIF durations use 10 ms steps, so 12 requested FPS becomes 80 ms per frame, or 12.5 FPS. The preview reports the actual timing.

  4. Export the actual GIF

Create and download the GIF, then open it to inspect the animation. Frames keep their selected pixel dimensions. Encoding runs on your device in a background worker; images are not sent to a server.

A working eight-frame example

The example is a 142 × 74 transparent sprite sheet with eight 32 × 32 frames, a 4 px left/top offset and 2 px gaps. At 10 FPS, the GIF is 32 × 32 pixels and one cycle lasts 0.8 seconds. Try column order or select a smaller frame range to see how the animation changes.

GIF quality and transparency

GIF supports fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, rather than partial alpha. Pixels below 128 alpha become transparent; the rest become opaque. Each frame supports up to 255 opaque colors plus one transparent entry. More colorful frames are quantized, so gradients and soft edges may change. Use the PNG cutter for lossless output encoding and partial transparency.

Every frame clears the previous frame before drawing, so transparent sprites can move without leaving trails. Source images are never automatically reduced in size to make an export succeed.

Sprite sheet to GIF questions

Can I choose only one row of animation?

Yes. With left-to-right order and four columns, start at frame 5 with count 4 to select the second row. Count 0 includes all remaining frames.

Can I edit the timing of individual frames?

The FPS setting applies to every selected frame. This tool does not yet support per-frame delays, arbitrary frame reordering or combining multiple source images.

What are the export limits?

Up to 256 frames per sheet layout (including unselected cells), 4 megapixels per GIF frame and 128 MiB of encoded output. Input limits are 20 MiB, 24 megapixels and 16,384 px per side. A modern browser with workers and OffscreenCanvas is required. Animated image inputs are treated as one still image.
