How to calculate image tile dimensions
Divide the source width by the number of columns and the source height by the number of rows. If both divisions produce whole numbers, every tile can have exactly the same dimensions without trimming.
Tile width = source width ÷ columns
Tile height = source height ÷ rows
To plan a design before you export it, work backward:
Source width = target tile width × columns
Source height = target tile height × rows
For seven 1080 × 1350 panels in one row, prepare a 7560 × 1350 image. These are chosen design dimensions, not a guarantee that a publishing platform will display them without cropping.
What happens to remainder pixels?
ImageSplitKit makes equal-sized tiles by rounding each tile dimension down to a whole pixel. A 5402 × 1350 source split into five columns gives five 1080 × 1350 tiles, with 2 pixel columns left over at the source image’s right edge.
The splitter asks you to confirm trimming that edge before export. It does not distribute the extra pixels among tiles or stretch the image to fit. A height that is not divisible by the row count is handled the same way at the bottom edge.
If every edge pixel matters, adjust the source design to cleanly divisible dimensions before exporting. A numerical plan does not change the image itself.
Worked examples
| Source | Grid | Result | Trimming |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2400 × 800 | 1 × 3 | 3 tiles, 800 × 800 | None |
| 5400 × 1350 | 1 × 5 | 5 tiles, 1080 × 1350 | None |
| 3240 × 2160 | 2 × 3 | 6 tiles, 1080 × 1080 | None |
| 5402 × 1351 | 2 × 5 | 10 tiles, 1080 × 675 | 2 px right, 1 px bottom |
Check the complete source, not just one tile
ImageSplitKit supports up to 24 million decoded source pixels, at most 16,384 pixels per side, and 1–10 rows and columns. Two 4000 × 4000 tiles need an 8000 × 4000 source: 32 million pixels, which exceeds the limit even though each tile is smaller.
The splitter also has a 20 MiB input file limit and an output archive size limit. This calculator only knows dimensions; it cannot check file size, image encoding or available browser memory. PNG, JPEG and WebP output sizes depend on the image and settings.
Splitting does not add detail to a blurry source. It also does not resize tiles or automatically crop them to a social platform’s aspect ratio.
Prepare your image and split it
- Create or export the source at your planned dimensions.
- Open the image splitter, select the image, and enter your rows and columns.
- Check the preview dimensions and any trimming warning before exporting.
